🩺 Expert Support for Post-Procedure Healing

At The Circumcision Doctor, we believe great care extends beyond the procedure itself. That’s why we are committed to delivering high-quality aftercare advice to help your child heal quickly, comfortably, and safely. While circumcision is a minor surgical procedure, proper aftercare significantly reduces the risk of complications and supports healthy recovery.

⏱ Time at the Clinic

Most families will spend around 90 minutes at the clinic on the day of the procedure. This includes time for:

A pre-operative health check
The circumcision itself (usually 10–30 minutes)
An extended observation period, where our experienced NHS-trained doctors monitor the healing area for early signs of bleeding or discomfort

This ensures your child is recovering well before you return home.

⚠️ Monitoring at Home

Once home, parents or caregivers should continue to monitor the healing area closely. Some light spotting or a small amount of blood on the nappy is normal. However, if you notice:

Heavy or persistent bleeding
Dark-coloured blood stains increasing in size
Pus or foul-smelling discharge

Please contact our aftercare support team immediately. We are available 24/7 and may ask you to return to the clinic so a doctor can assess and support your child’s recovery giving you extra peace of mind.

🧼 Hygiene & Bathing Advice

Cleanliness is key to preventing infection and ensuring a smooth recovery:

Keep the area clean and dry during the first 24 hours
Avoid bathing for the first day
After 24 hours, gently bathe your child with lukewarm water twice daily. This will ensure the plastibell falls off naturally and without any discomfort to your baby
Do not use baby wipes or soaps on the wound area initially

Apply a light layer of petroleum jelly (like Vaseline) to the front of your baby’s nappy or place a piece of gauze to prevent sticking. You may also leave the nappy off briefly during the day to promote airflow and healing.

🔁 Ongoing Wound Care

You’ll need to keep an eye on the wound for up to 14 days, with the following normal signs:

Some mild swelling around the penis
A scab forming over the incision line (do not remove or pick at it)
The Plastibell® device typically falls off naturally between 4–10 days
If it hasn’t fallen off by day 12, please contact our team for a follow-up assessment

🦠 Signs of Infection

Infections are rare but should be treated promptly. Contact us if:

The penis becomes increasingly swollen, red, or tense
There’s unusual discharge or a bad odour
Your child develops a fever or seems unusually distressed

Antibiotics may be prescribed if needed after evaluation by our doctors.

🍼 Feeding Aftercare

Since we use local anaesthetic, your baby can resume normal feeding right after the procedure. Some babies may feed less than usual for a day or two due to mild discomfort, but this typically settles quickly. We would recommend you bring some extra milk with you to give to your child after the procedure to comfort them.

💊 Pain Relief

The anaesthetic used during the procedure provides pain relief for several hours. If needed, you can give your child infant paracetamol (as advised by your doctor) to ease discomfort.
Remember:

Babies experience pain differently than adults and usually recover well with minimal intervention
Comforting your baby with cuddles, rocking, or gentle contact is completely fine and encouraged

📞 We’re Always Here to Help
